METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it has not penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to get it off by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper directly under the gum residue. Then we slide the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove gum that is already black, or is smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water power washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use very high pressure because that might ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be damaged much easier than people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal service.
